The Roman Camp

The Turda Salt Mine

Salt deposits in Transylvania (systematically exploited over time in the Dej Mine, in Cojocna , in Turda, in the Mures Mine,in the Sibiu Mine and in Praid) were formed 13.5 million years ago, in a low depth sea and in a very hot, tropical climat. The salt layer extends throughout the bottom of Transylvania, with a thickness of about 400 m. Clear archaeological evidence of salt exploitation in Durgau-Turda exist since the pre-Roman period (50 BC-106 AD). The romans (106-274 AD) have exploited salt in Durgau in pyramid shaped rooms .The salt mine is open to visitors and offers treatment for respiratory problems, a sports field, a panoramic elevator. This is a 6 milion euros project within modernization.
