The most important historical and archaeological monument of
Turda City is The Potaissa Roman Camp the Fifth Macedonian
Legion, on the Hill Fortress Plateau, built in 168 and
abandoned in the year 274. The Ruins remained standing until
late Middle Ages. Then, the shaped stones from the Roman
Camp were used for the construction of many buildings in the
center of Turda. In the camp were discovered several old
objects (architectural pieces, sculptures, mosaics,
inscriptions on stones, coins, small objects), most of them
can be found in various collections and museums in the
country, including the local History Museum, or abroad,
mostly in Budapest and Vienna.

The Turda Salt Mine
Salt deposits in Transylvania (systematically exploited over
time in the Dej Mine, in Cojocna , in Turda, in the Mures
Mine,in the Sibiu Mine and in Praid) were formed 13.5
million years ago, in a low depth sea and in a very hot,
tropical climat. The salt layer extends throughout the
bottom of Transylvania, with a thickness of about 400 m.
Clear archaeological evidence of salt exploitation in
Durgau-Turda exist since the pre-Roman period (50 BC-106
AD). The romans (106-274 AD) have exploited salt in Durgau
in pyramid shaped rooms .The salt mine is open to visitors
and offers treatment for respiratory problems, a sports
field, a panoramic elevator. This is a 6 milion euros project
within modernization.
